Artist Statement
Crafting my designs, I always think about function. How is the general public or my particular audience going to read or see this? Is it going to make sense for everyone to understand? I often find it helpful to brainstorm all my first ideas that come to mind and go from there. Through the process of refining and feedback, my final designs are revealed. Even after having those final designs I find it important to look back and think about the cohesiveness and function over all.
My goals for my designs are not always about my personal style but more about my client or audience. I make designs to solve a problem through the use of imagery and text, along with corresponding color pallets for that particular project. I love the use of color but also simplicity. When color is the main detail I can step out of a box more. Again the idea is to communicate to the viewers in a way they will understand as well.
Sports design and photography in todays world is in high demand for social media, showcases, and more. Sports players are always trying to get noticed to get their name out there to be seen by coaches, scouts, and future career opportunities. My role as a designer is to turn those photographs into art that social media wants to see. Using color, hierarchy, contrast and current trends is how I create my designs. Depending on each game I add my own style to go with the theme of that match up, from color to even typefaces used. Cameron Kinchen, Jonathan King, Todd Radom, and more have made a big impact over the years as designers in the sports field and with my knowledge in design I will do the same thing. Growing up playing sports myself I know the importance of photos, videos, and social media designs are for players in the game. Documenting the game as a former athlete gives me that purpose I’ve always looked for. My passion behind all my photography and design is why I’m where I am today and the knowledge I’ve grown to know as well. Making an impact in the sports world is what I’m here to do and going to do.
Personally as a designer I make an impact on the sports industry. It's who I am and it's who I’ve always been. Whether creating a print for fans to grab at an event or an in game graphic, I want the sports community to understand and love the design. What's a sports graphic if your fans or audience doesn't understand or miss interprets? Not a successful one. Variety is key but also having consistency where your fans can tell who’s team they’re looking at is very important. Yes, using team colors help but also a team slogan or a teams iconography is important to include too. Drawing the eye to the focal point might not always be in the center of your media graphic, team poster or even team apparel. Using hierarchy in sports design is just like any other design industry. Make your viewers see what's important.
As a photographer as well, the sports industry allows me to combine the two. Every fan wants to see that perfect action shot from the perfect play of the game. Combining that image with a final score? Your fans are going to love that graphic after a game. Photography and videography both tell a story about the team. One freezes time for a split second and the other one shows how the play went down. Both are important in the sports industry. I plan to make an impact by using all three tools and more.
“Victory is remembered for at most two decades; an act of good sportsmanship is remember for a lifetime”
